What is Science Theatre!?

And why am I blogging about it?

Science theatre is very loosly defined. It is honestly so broad that things even vaguely mentioning science can be considered science plays. I’m here to explore Science Theatre and everything under this crazy umbrella term.

But Abigail? Why should I care?

Why should you care? I think this is a very interesting question. To start, you don’t need to. It’s interesting but I’m not going to pressure you to be as invested as I am. However, there is a common understanding in the science theatre community that humans are story driven creatures. Which is why theatre is a great mode to explore complex topics such as science. Theatre allows us to break down ideas that may be confusing on a page and explore them in our imagination.

Well if Science Theatre is so great why isn’t it more popular?

Simply because individuals are often told from a young age that if you aren’t good at math and science you should try something else. The big concepts are scary when we don’t understand them right away. So by the time individuals reach adulthood they’ve brushed off any sense of curiosity about math or science with the excuse that it isn’t for them or is too hard to understand. But the reality is we live in a science driven world. Especially during the pandemic and it’s important to understand at least basic concepts to be able to engage with the world.

So what am I doing with this blog exactly? Well I’m hoping to do a few things.

  • At a basic level I want to spark curiosity within readers
  • At a more logistic level I want:
    • To review books about science theatre
    • Review plays and break down the science
    • discuss theatre practicioners working with science
    • discuss events about science theatre
    • help promote theatres that are putting on science plays
  • I want to be a one stop shop where audiences can come learn and explore

This is my pitch. Come for curiosity stay for the experience. I look forward to continuing to build this blog into something amazing.
